The festival takes place June 14 & June 15, 10am to 7pm at Paseo Colorado, located at 280 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena CA 91101
If you are looking for something to do this Father's Day weekend, may I suggest you come visit me at the Pasadena Chalk Festival? =) I will be recreating the painting you see above "Panda and Pandora's Box" in chalk pastels on a 5ft x 5ft sidewalk surface! There will be over 600 artists creating realistic portraits, animal paintings, copies of masterpieces, those amazing 3D perspective pictures... SERIOUSLY, ANYTHING YOU CAN THINK OF!
With over 100K visitors, this is one of the biggest chalk festivals in the world. The participants are a mix of professional chalk artists from all over the United States and kids who just want to draw Batman. Aside from cool art, there is plenty of shopping (this takes place at an outdoor mall and surrounding area), live music AND a vintage car show.
Each artist is donating a 12" x 12" painting for a silent auction that benefits arts education.
My painting "Panda and Pandora's Box" will be up for auction. If you are an out-of-towner that wants to bid on my painting, let me know! If you bid through me and win, I will personally ship this painting out to you for free! =) Please email me.
Want to know some of my chalk painting techniques?
To cover the 5ft x 5ft surface quickly, I will create chalk paint by grinding up the chalk and mixing it with water:
The chalk paint helps me block in the general colors quickly so that I can go on top of it with detail. For detail work, I will dip the chalk stick in water and draw in shadows and highlights. Wetting the chalk stick deepens the colors and makes it easier to work with.
This is what it looks like:
The pink chalk is painted on while the blue chalk is drawn on top. I blend the blue into the pink with my fingers. Since my artwork is mainly blues and greens, I had to pick up some extra pastels this weekend. In case you are curious, this cost me $65 at Dick Blick!! Ooouch that hurts! :)
Thanks for reading! Whether you come see me or not, I hope you guys have a great weekend!! =)
<3,
Sandra
