Day four of "the Enchanted Panda room" 3 hours

Sandra Fremgen December 31, 2013

Tonight I went out and bought an extra tube of titanium white and magenta OPEn acrylics. I am committed to making the OPEN paints work now.

For the painting, I solidified the colors of the rocks. The white figures look so interesting against the lush environment. Tomorrow I will add the waterfall and the vines in the bg just to see how things balance out.

Day 3 of "the Enchanted Panda room" 4 to 5 hours Sunday

Sandra Fremgen December 29, 2013

Today I solidified the background colors more and also added colors to the rocks for my painting. It is coming along nicely. I had to take off during the middle of the day to go pick up my pervious Panda print over at Monkey House Toys. Sad to say neither the print nor necklaces sold.

Anyway, I am trying to just be intuitive with the colors and not overwork them.

One idea I had for 2014 is to form a mini art group for mutual support.

Day two of "the Enchanted Panda Room"-- 10:30 am to 2 pm

Sandra Fremgen December 28, 2013

After our trip to Palm Springs (especially going to the SHAG store), I felt inspired to paint again. I neglected all my weekend chores and just attacked my canvas board.

It's hard to see here, but I have made the background colors more lush and blended them better. There are many brush strokes marks, giving the background an interesting vibration.

The OPEN golden acrylic paints still need some getting used to. It's a weird thought that I have to wait a couple of hours for the surface to dry. I can't over work a section too many times or else the colors will start to lift up and reveal white patches. Usually with regular acrylics you can just layer without hesitation.

I got a pleasant surprise call from Jessica. I stopped my painting session at 2:00 pm and headed out toTorrance to hang out with her. We talked a lot about jobs that put food on the table vs. jobs that we would really like to do. We also talked about putting a lot of effort into something and hoping that it doesn't suck.

Finally made it to the SHAG store!!

Sandra Fremgen December 26, 2013

After a couple of failed attempts to visit the SHAG store in Palm Springs, Tom and I finally made it this time. SHAG is our favorite artist and such an inspiration. His art is fun, stylish and technically very well done. He is able to combine selling individual paintings with licensing deals for glasses, purses, books, and cocktail items... This is the way I would like to be one day. Very cool that he has a store and shows in galleries.

Golden Open Acrylic Paints

Sandra Fremgen December 25, 2013

I have been curious to try Golden's OPEN brand of acrylics. These acrylic paints are supposed to stay wet on the palette and on the canvas much longer than traditional acrylic paints. I was shocked that they were still Wet on my palette the NEXT day! No retarder... Nothing used to extend paint life.

On the Canvas board, I applied thin coats as suggested and was able to blend them together like oil paint. I was surprised that the paint remained tacky and rework able even though hours had passed.

So far, the colors are just as vibrant as heavy body paints, but the paint itself is thinner than the heavy body. This is fine by me since I thin my stuff down anyway. The price is about the same as regular paints :)

Day 1 of painting "Panda and the hula girls"

Sandra Fremgen December 24, 2013

Spent about 3 hours on this painting. I laid in the background colors.. They are a bit darker than I intended, but I will add some mid tones and highlights. I am trying to keep a log of my painting hours... We will see how that goes :)
